Heaven Sent Grape Nectar: New and Vibrant Drinks Now Served at South Coast Winery’s Vineyard Rose Restaurant

 October 28, 2010, Temecula, California

-- Just announced!!! Award-winning South Coast Winery Resort & Spa’s Vineyard Rose Restaurant is serving up more than wine these days. It’s serving up specially created grape–based nectars with a twist. Due to licensing requirements, South Coast Winery is unable to sell anything other than vine–based alcohol which, until now, had prohibited consumers from enjoying a favorite Bloody Mary with their Sunday Brunch or a Cosmo at Happy Hour. Leave it to the ingenuity of the highly creative team of food and beverage professionals at the Vineyard Rose to press forward. They discovered the wonderful world of Grappa, a beverage made from the grape pomace, or the skin of the grape, and what is left after the grape is crushed in order to make wine.

After months of research, taste tests, a few headaches, and dumps, South Coast’s winemakers, colleagues and unsuspecting guests helped to select a grappa that was just right for the project at hand. Then bartenders, Justin and Scott, set off to discover the perfect mixes and blends to create a beverage of quality and character. According to Vineyard Rose Manager, Kari Carter, “The addition of mixed cocktails is the perfect enhancement to the Vineyard Rose restaurant experience. Being able to maintain quality grape–based properties for our cocktails was paramount and is an exciting step forward for South Coast Winery Resort & Spa.”

Why grappa? Just like fine wine, every grappa has a uniquely different character and taste. South Coast Winery recognizes its customers have a uniquely different character and taste too, which is why it produces over 40 styles of wine. South Coast Winery chose Jacopo Poli as its grappa of choice because of its stellar reputation for quality above quantity. The area where Jacopo Poli gathers their grappas’ grape-pomace ranges from Bassano del Grappa to the hills surrounding Marostica and Breganze, lands historically famous for the cultivation of grape vines. The still of the Poli Distillery is among the oldest in use today. It consists of cauldrons completely made of copper, as in centuries gone by. Its distillation cycle is discontinuous. This means that they put the grape–pomace into the cauldrons and then distill it using steam. After about three hours, they unload the cauldrons and the cycle begins again. Because of the individual characteristics of grappas and wines, Jacopo Poli was selected because it too has a nice selection of grappas with unique and wonderful aromatic profiles, combining primary flavors that are fruity, floral, herbaceous and spicy.

As is reflective of the South Coast Winery name, these new drinks stretch previous limitations; in fact, they are more than a "mixed" drink. The Jacopo Poli grappas that South Coast Winery selected are perfect for sipping or mixing up a Bloody Mary that makes each Sunday Brunch complete or a Margarita, Cosmo, Appletini or Chocolatini after a long day at the office. Of course, with Fall upon us, other patrons will be pleased to discover the Nardini line of grappas used for the Vineyard Rose’s delectable Toasted Almond, Hot Butternut and Creme Bruelee fireside sippers. Looking for a twist? Taste testers also enjoyed the Key Lime and Lemon Drops, but you be the judge. South Coast Winery Resort & Spa features a 39-acre destination property located in the heart of Southern California Temecula Valley’s Wine Country at 34843 Rancho California Road, Temecula, California and also is home to a wine-country themed restaurant and tasting room in the heart of Orange County California, and both can be found online at www.southcoastwinery.com.
